My First exposure to freelance contracting as a developer. I was brought on as an analyst developer in Dataease to work on a government Management Information System (MIS) while it was due to be migrated to Oracle. The Contract was for 8 weeks while they found a permanent replacement. This was quite a risk for me as my first child was due and I had a senior role in Bio-concepts. However, the Agent was very understanding of my caution citing extension is very likely.
I took the risk, and was extended a number of times up to 7 months.
Within this time I wrote and re-wrote core functions such that I was asked to become a returning consultant after leaving. I had a special commendation from the CEO for the inventive efficiency and rapid delivery of core functions that had been taking months with his team.
I first learned about entity relationship diagrams, development team collaboration and the importance of management information.
