Number Change

With the advent of the Big Number change, BT had a vast number of router configurations for ISDN2 devices to re-configure to facilitate. They had lined up 40 engineers to work 3 months to manually carry out this task. The final phone switch deadline was due 22 April 2000 and they were starting to sweat.

However, through my work on automating the initial creation of router configurations, I was asked by an innovative customer engineer colleague if I could help.

I worked closely with him for 2 months creating telnet scripts fed by a database that could recognise the end device, interrogate the config and apply the required changes to support the Big Number Change switch on every device in the country across many different ruter types. End to end application of this was 2 men for 2 weeks and no human errors. A huge saving for BT, and no end customer were aware of the activity having taken place.

This eventually lead to a project for which I was put forward for a natioal award by Halifax.
